Wrap-up of 2009 softball season

The 2009 Centennial Knight Softball season ended with both disappointment and hope.  By virtue of its ninth place finish in the 10-team 6-AAAAA region, the Knights failed to qualify for the post-season regional tournament. They did, however, close play with a 4-2 victory over the North Springs Spartans.  This season’s total of 4 wins was the most for the team in at least 5 years.

While the Knights must bid farewell to seniors Sarah Bailey, Danielle Forsberg and Mary Alice McBurney, they look forward to next season, hoping to further develop the young team.  This year’s roster included 6 freshmen and 3 sophomores, 5 of whom usually started.

The improved pitching and defense of the Knights resulted in a somewhat anomalous statistic: despite its 1-8 region and 4-11 overall record, the Knights were one of only two teams in the region to never allow more than 8 runs scored against it in any single game.  Sophomore pitcher Caitlin Forsberg and junior pitcher Jamie Gottlieb pitched well enough to keep Centennial in every game this season.  The defense was anchored by the stellar play of sophomore shortstop Megan Veringa and centerfielder Bailey.

Two freshmen led the team in hitting: third baseman Mel Blanke hit .324 and catcher Halle Steinberg hit .297.  Blanke also led the team in hits, extra base hits, runs batted in and slugging percentage.  Bailey and freshman leftfielder Rayna Berinhout tied for the lead in most runs scored.
